Why it is dangerous for children to sleep too much

How many times have I had to listen to my mother during my adolescence, get up, so many hours in bed are going to make you feel bad! I thought that was an excuse to get going and clean up the room as soon as possible, but now I discover that there were many medical arguments hidden in those words.

I doubt that my mother knew exactly the reasons that the studies allege, but the truth is that behind that phrase there was a lot of hidden truth ... and some cleaning mania. And is that, Studies confirm it: sleeping excessively is dangerous for your health.

There are several studies that show that as we age, sleep hours decrease: from 14 to 17 hours that newborns sleep a day, to those over 65 who should not spend more than 7 or 8 hours in bed .

- Children up to one year should not spend 15 hours of sleep

- Those from 1 to 2 years old: 14 hours

- From 3 to 5 years: 13 hours

- In adolescence: from 8 to 10 hours

- Adults between 7 and 9 hours.

Based on that, you can calculate if your children are sleeping the right hours or if they are inveterate sleepers, although this rarely happens. Sleep in children is especially important because their growth takes place mainly at night, the brain replenishes itself from the day and the body regenerates; However, there are dangers associated with excessive sleep that are almost unknown to most of us.

- They affect a higher rate of headaches and back pain, in addition to heart problems and an increase in depression.

- In children it could influence a weight gain and in a calmer and more sedentary kind of life.

- The same study also added that people who sleep too much are twice as likely to have type 2 diabetes than the rest.

- As for the child's brain, excessive sleep say that can affect the level of concentration and attention during school, produce drowsiness during the day, produce memory loss and decrease brain function, which could later lead to premature aging and a greater chance of Alzheimer's.

- Sleeping too much produces in the brain a state of lethargy that hinders our daily activity, slows down our body and our ability to respond, we can even feel more tired and less willing to face the day to day. In addition, it is also proven that there is a increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and up to five times the chance of hypertension.

So you know, if you have very sleepy children, you already have an excuse to get them out of bed soon!
