Small child

Would your child go too?

Children think in a simple way: this man does not look bad, they are not scary, they have a nice expression on their faces, they smile, so you can trust them, talk to them, look for a kitty together, look at photos or play football ...

When children do not talk about existing threats, the children are unable to react in an appropriate way when the so-called difficult situation occurs.

For example, one that became the subject of an experiment carried out by the British television station, ITV Daybreak. "Journalistic provocation" showed that 7 out of 9 children left the playground with a stranger. It is true that the test was carried out on a small group of children (it can be said that the representative group), but it still gives food for thought.

Psychologists emphasize that the result may reflect the behavior of all children, also in Poland.

What was the experiment like?

An adult man approached children playing in the playground. He asked if they had seen a dog or daughter and asked for help in searching.

As many as seven out of nine children almost immediately left the playground with a stranger. For the experiment to be successful, the child's parent had earlier answered the phone and informed the toddler that he would return soon and watched the whole scene hidden behind the bushes. Events were also recorded by a camera.

The parents were under the care of a psychologist. The reaction of those who observed that their child was moving away from a stranger was easy to predict. They showed up shock and disbelief. For some, also "sobering up" and a resolution to improve their children's awareness.

Do such experiments make sense?

The evaluation of the above experiment is not conclusive. Some say that it only causes unnecessary panic. Others emphasize that this is very valuable information for parents who, by making children aware of the dangers, can ensure that they reduce the risk of unfortunate events.

A lesson for everyone?

Some psychologists even recommend that a similar experiment be carried out on their own, asking for help from a friend (unknown to the child) to talk to the child about the situation after the arranged situation: to praise that the child did not go with the stranger or practice certain behaviors when the child they went away with a stranger.

And what do you think about it? Do you talk to children about safety rules? Do you warn against strangers?
