10 mistakes made by parents in the kitchen


Proper human nutrition is of great importance from the first years of life. It has a significant impact on our health, physical and mental condition and development. Unfortunately, already in the first months of the child's life parents, often unknowingly, make feeding mistakes that have their origins in the kitchen - when preparing meals. Research confirms that 25% of children in Poland are not properly fed.

The most common mistakes made by parents in the kitchen are summarized in the following list.

1. Salting and adding salt

When preparing meals for a child, the parent uses various spices and makes the dish tasty. Very often, he adds salt to soup or meat. Also, when giving a ready meal from a jar, it happens that the parent finds the dish unpalatable and distributes it. At the same time, he forgets that a toddler who is just learning about food has sharp sense, does not know the taste of salty, does not know how "should taste the meal", just develops culinary taste.

Instead of salt, simply season the dish with herbs. And salt can be used sparingly after several months of expanding your diet.

2. Sweetening dishes

Today, more and more is being said about reducing sugar in a child's diet. However, sometimes you can hear that a parent gives a child to drink water with sugar or glucose, sweetens milk, dipped sugar soother - although many do not loudly admit it. In addition, sugar is added to the standard meal preparation, e.g. porridges, jar dishes or even tomato soup. Sugar is an important ingredient on the label of many baby products. Also those considered "healthy".

Unfortunately, later the child becomes addicted to sugar, appears caries, obesity, digestive problems. If we already have to use sugar to prepare a meal, replace standard white sugar with honey, xylitol (with it attention, it can cause diarrhea) or sweeten the dish with sweet fruit - bananas, dates.

3. Adding fat to dishes

The parent often underestimates the nutritional recommendations. The soup is prepared in a standard way without adding fat.

Meanwhile, seasoning baby soup with a spoon of butter or vegetable oil is not without significance. The fat added to the dish will ensure better absorption of vitamins and minerals and also replenish the supply of omega 3 acids (olive oil, walnut oil, linseed oil).

4. Too much mix in relation to the amount of water when preparing milk

The toddler is hungry, crying, demanding milk, we go shopping and we want the child to be well fed - these are just two examples when the parent does not keep the right proportions when preparing the milk mixture. Thinking that the food will be more full-bodied, it increases the amount of powder contrary to the manufacturer's recommendations. Unfortunately, the mixture prepared in this way is not healthy for a small tummy. Doing so can lead to obesity, overfeeding and even digestive problems.

5. Cooking soups on meat stocks

Because of the risk of allergies, babies are not served with soups prepared from meat stocks at the beginning, which parents often forget. The meat should be cooked separately and only then added to the soup. Meat decoction may be too greasy and difficult to digest through a small belly, which is why we do not give it earlier than in the 8th month.

6. Use of poor quality ingredients and improper storage

Ingredients for preparing meals for children should be purchased from proven sources, which is sometimes difficult. The parent often without thinking chooses a grown carrot or meat bought in the bazaar, and yet this grown carrot speaks for itself - it is stuffed with fertilizers, and meat without special tests can simply be dangerous to the health and life of the child. The same applies to storage. Products should not be in the fridge or freezer for too long.

7. Adding processed products to dishes

When preparing soup, the parent sometimes wants to give a better taste, adds a stock cube, vegeta, maggi, while forgetting that it is simply unhealthy: artificial additives, preservatives and large amounts of salt speak for themselves. The same applies to low-quality sausages or canned food, which are often an addition to the dish or are served as the dish itself.

8. Incorrect food preparation - frying, overcooking

Fried pork chop, scrambled eggs on bacon - these dishes are not allowed for an infant. Fried and too greasy foods can put a great strain on the immature digestive system and lead to health problems. Frying is not the only mistake when preparing a meal. Parents often wanting to cook well, changing its consistency, overcook the ingredients, depriving them of nutritional value. Especially vegetables should be soft, but not overcooked and prepared in a small amount of water or steamed.

9. Mixing dishes to a mushy consistency

Mixing and crushing dishes is a very common mistake made by parents. Of course, there is nothing wrong with mixing the first dishes, but in the later months there is simply no such need. A toddler at the age of 8-9 months no longer needs dishes mixed to the consistency of slurry, it can disturb the correct throwing, cause malocclusion and even discourage the baby from eating. It is enough to gradually introduce larger pieces in meals, e.g. by finely chopping the ingredients.

10. Using poor quality water to prepare a meal

Most often, the parent uses ordinary tap water to prepare children's meals. Such water may be drinkable, but the chemical compounds it contains can cause allergies, especially in infants. For the preparation of a milk mixture, soup, etc. in the first months of a child's life, it is better to use bottled water.

Parents make many mistakes when preparing meals for children. First of all, they forget that the meal is intended for a child and should be prepared with due diligence. Rarely, a child's diet is varied. A better solution seems to be serving only your favorite dishes, bypassing those "more risky". The child's diet is often poor in fish, vegetables, fruits, seeds, which can adversely affect his health and immunity.
