A few years ago I came across the basics of Maria Montessori's methodology for the first time. First, I learned theoretical knowledge, then I confronted it at work with children in kindergarten institutions with such a profile that I finally decided to run a kindergarten, implementing the Montessori assumptions. Today I have the opportunity to look at this methodology from a different angle. I find out how universal it is every day, taking care of, entertaining and creatively spending time with my children.
What fascinated me in Montessori pedagogy from the very beginning was perception of the child: as a completely separate beingwhich, despite being so fragile and relying entirely on us, has a plan for its own development. Such a being can influence itself and is not really "plasticine" in our hands.
M. Montessori's phrase: "No one can grow up for a child ...", which concerns the child's development not only in a physical sense, is very accurate for me. In front of our eyes, it not only grows, it begins to move or speak, but also develops its intellect or spirituality.
However, for a child to develop as fully as possible, he / she should grow in a suitable environment. In recent years, it is very common to hear about the need for children, even those who are several weeks or months old "Stimulating development" and the related necessity of our intensive "help". Therefore, "caring" parents, guardians, grandparents strive to do it at every step. From the very first days of their lives, they also cover their babies with a huge number of sophisticated and expensive "educational toys" that play, sing, flash, speak, and move. Such toys bombard the toddler's nervous system with a lot of stimuli, meanwhile, you can stimulate children's senses in a much more natural and simple way.
"Home-made" teaching aids such as:
- "murmur" cans and bottles, filled with porridge, peas or lentils - these are the perfect rattles for babies. They can be screwed plastic kefir or yogurt bottles. For use by senior citizens they are marked with colors (two of the same color). Shaking them and guessing what makes this sound rather than pairs or stacking in pairs guarantees not only fun for several years, but stimulates the senses,
- canvas bags with scraps of materials with different textures and colors: two the same scraps that can be selected in pairs,
- twisted in jars brought from the "gifts of the forest" (cones, chestnuts, acorns, dried rowan, leaves), viewing of which helps to train memory and encourages the story when we ask the child where he brought the individual "gifts",
- sets of type: grater + soap, grinder + coffee, two bowls / jugs + water / loose products for pouring (flour, semolina, bread crumbs, etc.) - allowing you to train your dexterity and dexterity ...
In their creation and use the only limit is our imagination, and during use, our role should be to present the possibilities of these applications, in order to retreat after a while, respecting children's work. All the more effective if we don't interrupt it, even by asking questions.
Sometimes it is enough to be next to a child, watch them, allowing them to penetrate the world. It is also a great idea to Turn everyday activities into fun. Even washing your hands after coming out of a walk can be inspiring: just two bowls of water and a large, slipping hand of soap bar that needs to be caught.
